Spring Term 1
This term’s topic: Imagination and Make Believe: Where can our imagination take us?
- Communication & Language- Children will continue to develop listening skills, through learning rhymes and listening to longer stories. They will be encouraged to re-tell stories using props, small world and role-play. There will be opportunities for children to talk about what they see and observe when engaging in topic related activities and experiments.
- Personal, Social, Emotional Development – We will be working on helping children to become even more independent when playing and working with other children. The PSHE Jigsaw topic this half term is Dreams and Goals. Books to support this unit – Love Monster, Don’t Worry Hugless Douglas and The Jungle Run.
- Physical Development – This half term we will be focusing on climbing and balancing on different equipment. Children will develop their fine motor skills and be encouraged to show a preference for a dominant hand. They will have lots of opportunities to practice name writing and forming letters from their name, whilst practicing their pencil grip.
- Literacy- Children will be joining in with rhymes and repeated refrains. They will be encouraged to talk about familiar books, think about what might happen next and talk about their favourite part of the story. They will be developing their ability to write through mark-making activities. The children will start learning RWI Set 1 sounds.
- Maths- Our focus will be on number – confidently reciting numbers past 5 and developing fast recognition of up to 3 objects, matching numbers to sets and using numbers in our play. We will be playing lots of counting games and singing number rhymes. We will focus on the different shapes all around us and will go on a shape hunt. We will also use shapes for printing, sorting, naming and making pictures and patterns.
- Understanding the World – We will be exploring changes in the weather, looking for signs of change in the environment such as trees and wildlife. Children will be developing an understanding of what is happening and the changes that occur during melting and freezing. We will be learning how people around the world celebrate Lunar new year. We will also be planning, designing and building a dragon which will lead onto learning how to perform the dragon dance.
- Expressive Arts and Design – Children will continue to practice previous skills of cutting, printing and sticking. They will begin to learn the new skill of cutting with a purpose in mind and using tape to stick. They will have lots of opportunities to take part in simple role play, and be encouraged to develop complex stories using small world toys.
Autumn Term 2
- C&L- We will be developing our listening and attention skills through listening to stories that are being read or told to us. We will be listening to others, one to one, and in small groups. We will talk about ourselves, our families and people who help us, using a wider range of vocabulary. We will learn to listen to others and answer simple ‘who, what, where’ questions. We will learn to respond to instructions that have two parts, such as: “Get your coat and wait at the door.”
- PSED- We will be focusing on key skills: independence – putting own coat and welly boots on; following our class rules and understanding why they are important; taking turns and sharing. The PSHE Jigsaw topic, Celebrating Difference focuses on similarities and differences.
- PD- We will be developing our gross motor skills indoors, outdoors and during PE sessions. This half term the focus will be on developing spatial awareness, movement skills and hand/feet to eye coordination. We will work on lots of fine motor activities to practise forming the tripod grip.
- Literacy- Children will be recognising familiar text and signs in the environment. They will be learning to identify letters in their name and will have a go at writing initial letters of their name. When writing or drawing, children will be encouraged to ascribe meaning to the marks that they make. In phonics we will be tuning in to sounds (auditory discrimination), listening and remembering sounds (auditory memory and sequencing) and talking about sounds (developing vocabulary and language comprehension).
- Maths- We will practise counting aloud to ensure that children use one-to-one principal when counting and know that the last number reached when counting a small set of objects tells how many there are in total (‘cardinal principle’). We will be learning that objects can be compared and ordered by size and by their mass. Children will be introduced to patterns and explore simple examples to develop their understanding of both the word and the concept.
- UW- Children will discuss how people celebrate different festivals and celebrations as a family and will be encouraged to share their experiences. We will be looking at different people in our community that help us. A visit from the Fire Brigade & Police, as well as a visit to the post box will help develop an understanding of different occupations and what they do to help us.
- EAD- Children will explore different materials freely. They will develop their own ideas and then decide which materials to use to express them. Children will take part in pretend play indoors and outdoors. Children will develop their repertoire of songs that they know to include number songs and Christmas songs. They will be exploring the different sounds that instruments make.
Spring Term 1
This term’s topics: Imagination and Make Believe – What is magic?
- Literacy – We will be practising our reading and writing skills by being inspired by a range of books based on magical worlds. We will also create our own imaginative stories about fictional superheroes.
- Maths – We will continue to deepen our understanding of number, by focusing on the following elements.
- Cardinality & Counting: Understanding that the cardinal value of a number refers to the quantity, or ‘how many’ of things it represents.
- Comparison: Understanding that comparing numbers involves knowing which numbers are worth more or less than each other.
- Composition: Understanding that one number can be made up from (composed from) two or more smaller numbers.
- Communication and Language – We will be continuing to develop our speaking and listening skills including encouraging the children to develop their questioning skills to find out about something they are interested in or in response to what someone had said.
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development – We will be talking about how we can try and find solutions to problems that we may have when playing and learning with others, we will talk about finding ways to ensure that everyone is being treated fairly and will start thinking about how it makes others feel when they are treated unfairly. During our Jigsaw PSHE sessions we will be exploring the topic Dreams and Goals. We will be reading the following books during those sessions: Don’t worry, Hugless Douglas by David Melling and The Jungle Run by Tony Mitton.
- Physical Development – We will be continuing to develop our fine motor skills and learn to form and write letters correctly and independently. We will be focusing on developing gross motor skills through PE lessons and discussing what contributes to a healthy diet.
- Expressive Arts and Design – We will have opportunities to use role play to act out different scenarios from familiar stories. The children will also be creating masks and puppets to use as props when retelling a story.
- Understanding the World – We will be discussing changes in the seasons and what this looks and feels like, and we will be using a variety of technology to record our learning. We will also be exploring the festival of Lunar New Year.
Autumn Term 2
- Literacy – We will be continuing to read environmental print, recognising and writing our own name. There will be a focus on daily phonics activities where the children will continue to identify sounds in words and how to segment and blend them independently.
- Maths – We will be exploring numbers to 10, discussing the composition of these numbers and accurately counting different amounts in a range of fun and exciting ways. We will also be subitising, looking at one more and one less and comparing equal and unequal groups.
- Communication and Language – We will be developing our speaking and listening skills including encouraging the children to develop their questioning skills to find out about something they are interested in or in response to what someone had said.
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development – We will be discussing the characteristics of people who can help us and what qualities they may have. We will also continue to follow routines and build relationships with both adults and peers. During our Jigsaw PSHE sessions we will be discussing how everyone is different and how we can be kind to one another, exploring the topic Celebrating Difference. The PSHE books that will be used in the PSHE lessons this half-term are Barry the Fish with Fingers by Sue Hendra, It’s OK to Be Different by Todd Parr and The Family Book by Todd Parr.
- Physical Development – We will be continuing to develop our fine and gross motor skills indoors, outdoors and during PE sessions. We will continue to focus on developing shoulder and finger strength and dexterity in order to be able to hold a pencil and form letters correctly.
- Expressive Arts and Design – We will have opportunities to paint, draw and use play dough. We will be designing, cutting, sticking and mixing colours. We will develop our musical creativity, exploring sounds different musical instruments make and learning the songs and actions for our Nativity performance.
- Understanding the World – The children will be learning about a variety of cultures and religions by finding out about their celebrations, special stories and aspects of their identity and relationships. For example, Diwali, Guru Nanak’s birthday and Christmas.
Autumn Term 1
Wonders of the World – What makes us wonderfully unique?
Literacy – We will be reading environmental print, recognising and writing our own name. We will have a big focus on our daily phonics activities. The children will be beginning to learn how to identify sounds in words and how to segment or blend them. We will be looking at lots of books in our literacy lessons and we will be discussing our favourite characters.
Maths – We will be exploring numbers to 10 and beyond, accurately counting different amounts in a range of fun and exciting ways. We will also be learning how to subitise.
Communication and Language – We will be learning about the importance of speaking and listening to each other, sharing ideas, responding to instructions, answering questions and using language in imaginative play.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development – Children will be settling in to their new class, routines and building relationships with both adults and their peers. We will be talking about who we are, our families and the things we enjoy doing. During our Jigsaw PSHE sessions we will be discussing a range of emotions and feelings, exploring ‘Being Me in this World’. The PSHE books that will be used in the PSHE lessons this half-term are Hands Are Not for Hitting by Martine Agassi and Dogger by Shirley Hughes
Physical Development – We will be continuing to develop our fine and gross motor skills indoors, outdoors and during PE sessions. We will focus on developing shoulder and finger strength and dexterity in order to be able to hold a pencil and form letters correctly.
Expressive Arts and Design – We will have opportunities to paint, draw and use play dough. We will be designing, cutting, sticking and mixing colours. We will be creating self-portraits and portraits of friends, making collages, seasonal and topic related pictures. To develop our musical creativity, we will be exploring sounds different musical instruments make.
Understanding the Word – We will talk about some of our similarities and differences in relation to friends or family. The children will be encouraged to select and use resources around the classroom to build and construct a variety of models. The children will learn about a variety of religions by finding out about their celebrations, special stories and aspects of their identity and relationships.

- English: The children will be learning about Traditional Tales and Fairy tales and will be using their imagination to create their own stories.
- Maths: We will be using a variety of strategies to look at numbers to 20, solve addition and subtraction number problems within 20 and discuss shapes and patterns.
- RE: The children will be exploring the question: What does it mean to belong to Christianity?
- Geography: Where in the UK would Shrek most like to live? Investigating human and physical geography. Comparing the various places people can live in the UK: town or countryside. We will also have a focus on geographical vocabulary, for example, harbour, cove etc.
- Science: We will be looking at everyday materials. What is the best material for…?
- Computing: Programming A – moving a robot (Beebot).
- Design Technology: The children will be designing, making and evaluating their own puppet.
- PSHE: We will be discussing our dreams and goals and reading Going on a Bear Hunt.
- Music: The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi – looking at music based on the weather.

This term’s theme: Imagination and Make Believe. The children will be asking: Can you imagine what it would be like to live somewhere in Asia?
- English: Traditional Tales and Fairy Tales – Baba Yaga and The Princess and the Pea.
- Mathematics: Measuring the length and mass of objects. Solving word problems using all four operations.
- Geography: Can you imagine what it would be like to live somewhere in Asia? The children will look at world maps and compare London with Beijing (climate, human and physical features, population, trade etc.)
- Design and Technology: Textiles – making pouches.
- Art and Design: Painting and Mixed Media: Life in colour.
- Science: Everyday Materials: How can materials be changed?
- RE: Why are different books special to different people? The children will learn about the important place of books in religious traditions and how people’s attitudes to these books are shown in how they treat them.

English: We will be focusing on Black History Month, this will involve reading texts from a range of cultures and exploring a more diverse range of authors and main characters within the texts. The children will be exploring the texts ‘Fly Eagle Fly’ and ‘Wangari’s Trees of Peace.’
Maths: We will focus on number facts, numbers to 100 and then move onto addition and subtraction.
History: ‘Has our wonderful world always looked like this?’ The children will be exploring different types of dinosaurs and how volcanoes are formed.
Science: We will be exploring different rocks, fossil and soils and their properties.
Religious Education: How do Jewish people celebrate their beliefs at home and in the synagogue? The children will learn about how Jewish people celebrate the festivals of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

English: This half term, our whole school focus will be Black History Month. This is reflected in our focus text, which will be Journey to Jo’burg by Beverley Naidoo. The children will be analysing characters and will have the opportunity to write their own setting descriptions as well as parts of a narrative and poetry.
Mathematics: Over the course of this term, children will first recap their prior learning. They will then be starting the Maths No Problem syllabus with Chapter 1 – numbers to 10000, then Chapter 2 – addition and subtraction within 10000 and finally Chapter 3 – multiplication and division.
Geography: We will be using maps and atlases to locate countries with the world’s most famous and iconic rivers and mountains. Children will investigate the creation and structure of rivers and mountains. They will then build their understanding of the water cycle and learn about the impact of water on communities.
Science: In science this half term, children will be learning about the different states of matter. They will spend time experimenting with different materials and discussing their properties.
Religious Education: This term, the Big Question is: What is special to me and the people in my community? Children will have the opportunity to see and understand how diverse our community is and will be able to discover similarities and differences between places of worship and religious practices.
PSHE: Our topic is Being Me in My World. Children will discuss what it means to be themselves and also what it means to be a part of a team.
Art and Design: Children will be focussing on the skill of drawing this half term.

English:
This term there is going to be a whole-school focus on texts linked to Black History Month and multiculturalism with a more diverse range of authors and main characters within the texts. For their Big Write, the children will be writing a narrative. Later on in the term, we will be looking at poetry and analysing poetic structure.
Maths:
Number is the first maths topic the children get to experience during this half term. The children will be learning about place value and the composition of larger numbers. Later on this term, we will be delving deeper into exploring number by looking at patterns of numbers and methods for addition and subtraction.
BPS Curriculum:
Our theme is how to rediscover the wonders of the ancient world. We will be considering different civilisations, such as those during the Shang Dynasty, Indus Valley, Ancient Sumer and Ancient Egyptian times and looking at some of their societal and cultural beliefs and practices. In Art, we will be looking at the significance of painting portraits, as well as mixed media.
Science:
This term we will learning about properties of, and changes in, materials. The children will compare and group together everyday materials based on their properties. They will have the opportunity to demonstrate that dissolving, mixing and changes of state are reversible changes.
Religious Education:
The children will learn about a variety of religious and non-religious beliefs and viewpoints. They will have the opportunity to discuss the impact beliefs have on actions, and learn about other beliefs in their community.

English: Narrative and Poetry
We will begin the half term reading ‘Ghost Boys’ by Jewell Parker Rhodes. The focus of this will be to examine the common features and cultural importance of narrative writing.
We will also study the poet Joseph Coelho. During this week, we will examine poetic and literary features, such as figurative language and rhyme.
Maths: Number and Place Value
Our focus for the first half term will be on consolidating number skills for values up to 10 million. Through the Maths No Problem! scheme, pupils will also further their reasoning and problem solving skills through use of the concrete-pictorial-abstract approach.
Curriculum: Where are the wonders of the world?
The children will be brushing up on their geographical skills, using different types of atlases to locate the wonders of the world.
Science: Evolution and Inheritance
Children this half term will be investigating how humans and animals have evolved.
Religious Education: Similarities and Differences between Religions and World Views
By the end of this topic, children will be able to compare differing religious and world views.
