Spring 2 Term 2023
Curriculum This term’s topic: Mother Nature – Why do things change?
C&L– Children will continue to build up vocabulary that reflects the breadth of their experiences. They will be encouraged to learn to listen carefully, to develop concentration, to respond to questions and instructions, to share ideas and experiences, and to take part in conversations.
PSED– Children will be encouraged to develop positive relationships, to play with a variety of friends and to understand the feelings of others.
PD- This half term we will be focusing on dance – moving freely with pleasure and confidence in a range of ways. We will be learning to hold the pencil between thumb and two fingers through lots of fine motor activities and mark making practise.
Literacy– The children will continue learning RWI Set 1 sounds. They will learn to form recognisable letters for their name, for example when writing in Mother’s Day and Easter cards. Children will practise oral blending skills.
Maths– Our focus will be on number – children will continue to subitise up to 5 items and practise counting forwards, and backwards, accurately using the counting principles. They will learn to represent up to ten objects on a ten frame. The children will be introduced to the concept of height and show how their height compares with the size of other objects around them.
UW– We will focus on our outdoor environment – getting to know the features of the garden area, seeing the changes over the term. The children will be learning about the life cycle of a chicken.
EAD– We will continue to focus on cutting and scissor skills. Children will be using a variety of resources to create props to re-enact well-known stories and to make up their own stories. We will be making our own
bird feeders for the garden.
Spring 1 Term 2023
Curriculum
This term’s topic: Imagination and Make Believe: Where can our imagination take us?
C&L- Children develop sustained listening skills, through learning rhymes and listening to stories. We encourage the use of questioning, to find out more, such as “why” and “how” and “who” and “when”. In talking, we want all the children to feel confident enough to make contributions to discussion in a group and to listen to others.
PSED- We will be talking about friendships and making good choices during play. The PSHE Jigsaw topic Dreams and Goals. It includes goal-setting, aspirations, who do I want to become and what would I like to do for work and to contribute to society.
PD- This half term we will be focusing on climbing and balancing on different equipment. We will be also learning to control a ball in different ways.
Literacy- The children will be joining in with rhymes and repeated refrains. They will be developing their ability to write through mark-making activities. The children will start learning RWI Set 1 sounds.
Maths- Our focus will be on number – counting, matching numbers to sets and using numbers in our play. We will be playing lots of counting games and singing number rhymes. In meaningful contexts, children will be learning to make comparisons between objects relating to size, length, weight and capacity.
UW/RE- Exploring images of familiar situations in the past. Expressing our likes and dislikes. Learning about Celebrations in our community, such as Chinese New Year. Using different equipment and tools, we will explore how things and will be encouraged to talk about different forces we can feel.
EAD- Focus on cutting and scissor skills. Begin to draw conclusions from trial and error about which joining methods and materials work best.
Autumn Term 2
Curriculum – This term’s topic: Special People and Special Places
C&L– We are concentrating our learning on speaking and listening. We will learn to talk about ourselves, our families and people who help us in simple sentences with clarity and intonation. We will learn to listen to others and answer ‘who, what, where’ in simple questions. We will learn to respond to simple instructions.
PSED– The children will be making positive relationships with their friends and learning to share and take turns with equipment and resources. This half term, The PSHE Jigsaw topic Celebrating Difference focuses on similarities and differences.
PD– We will work on lots of gross and fine motor skills to develop dexterity and to encourage the
children to establish a dominant hand if they have not already done so. In the outdoor environment and in PE the focus will be on developing spatial awareness, movement skills and hand/feet to eye coordination.
Literacy- The children will continue to learn to recognise their names and have a go at writing their names. The children are encouraged to mark–make and talk about the picture they are making.
Maths – We will use one-to-one principal when counting and knowing that the last number reached when counting a small set of objects tells how many there are in total (cardinal principle). We will be learning to identify 2D shapes and sort them.
UW– Children will have the opportunity to explore their environment both indoors and outdoors. They will be learning about people and places special to them.
EAD– During the sessions, the children will be learning how to use colour and shapes to produce art work, models and crafts.
Spring Term 2
Curriculum
This term’s topics: Mother Nature – What do plants, animals and humans need to grow?
Literacy – As our topic is Mother Nature, we will be using a combination of fiction and non-fiction texts to explore this topic. The children will sequence key events of the stories and practise retelling them. Our key focus will be independent sentence writing and widening the children’s vocabulary.
Maths – We will continue to deepen our understanding of number, by focusing on the following elements.
Cardinality & Counting: Understanding that the cardinal value of a number refers to the quantity, or ‘how many’ of things it represents.
Comparison: Understanding that comparing numbers involves knowing which numbers are worth more or less than each other.
Composition: Understanding that one number can be made up from (composed from) two or more smaller numbers.
Communication and Language – We will be working on conversation skills and responding to others with relevant comments. The children will be encouraged to ask and answer where, who, what, when and why questions. They will be using words such as first, last, next, before, after, all, most, some, each and every in their narratives.
Personal, Social, Emotional Development – Developing sharing and caring skills, the children will be learning to negotiate turn taking and dealing with minor disagreements. They will also be thinking about what they are good at and what they still find difficult. They will learn about looking after plants and animals. The PSHE Jigsaw topic this half term is Healthy Me. We will be reading the following books during those sessions: ‘Not Everyone is Nice’ (Let’s Talk Book) by Ann Tedesco and ‘Never Talk to Strangers’ by Irma Joyce.
Physical Development – We will be continuing to develop our overall body strength, co-ordination, balance and agility in the outdoor area and during our PE sessions. We will continue to build on our fine motor skills, as well as accurate letter formation.
Expressive Arts and Design – The children will be participating in drama activities related to the stories they have read. During art activities, the children will be using their observational skills to paint and create patterns in nature.
Understanding the World – Linking with our topic, we will have discussions about the environment with our main focus being the natural world. We will look closely at plants and seasonal changes. We will also be learning about a variety of habitats and the animals that live there.

This term’s topics: Imagination and Make Believe – What is magic?
Literacy – We will be practicing our reading and writing skills by being inspired by a range of books based on magical worlds. We will also make up our own imaginative stories about fictional superheroes.
Maths – We will continue to deepen our understanding of number, discussing the composition of numbers and accurately counting different amounts in a range of fun and exciting ways.
Communication and Language – We will be continuing to develop our speaking and listening skills including encouraging the children to develop their questioning skills to find out about something they are interested in or in response to what someone had said.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development – We will be talking about how we can try and find solutions to problems that we may have when playing and learning with others, we will talk about finding ways to ensure that everyone is being treated fairly and will start thinking about how it makes others feel when they are treated unfairly. During our Jigsaw PSHE sessions we will be exploring the topic ‘Dreams and Goals.’ We will be reading the following books during those sessions: ‘Don’t worry, Hugless Douglas’ by David Melling and ‘The Jungle Run’ by Tony Mitton.
Physical Development – We will be continuing to develop our fine motor skills and learn to form and write letters correctly and independently. We will be focusing on developing gross motor skills through PE lessons and discussing what contributes to a healthy diet.
Expressive Arts and Design – We will have opportunities to use role play to act out different scenarios from familiar stories. The children will also be creating masks and puppets to use as props when retelling a story.
Understanding the Word – We will be discussing changes in the seasons and what this looks and feels like, and we will be using a variety of technology to record our learning. We will also be exploring the festival of Chinese New Year.

This term’s topics: Special People and Special Places – Who can help us?
Literacy – We will be continuing to read environmental print, recognising and writing our own name. We will have a big focus on our daily phonics activities. The children will continue to identify sounds in words and how to segment and blend them independently.
Maths – We will be exploring numbers to 10, discussing the composition of these numbers and accurately counting different amounts in a range of fun and exciting ways. We will also be subitising, looking at one more and one less and comparing equal and unequal groups.
Communication and Language – We will be developing our speaking and listening skills including encouraging the children to develop their questioning skills to find out about something they are interested in or in response to what someone had said.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development – We will be discussing the characteristics of people who can help us and what qualities they may have. We will also continue to follow routines and build relationships with both adults and peers. During our Jigsaw PSHE sessions we will be discussing how everyone is different and how we can be kind to one another, exploring the topic ‘Celebrating Difference’.
Physical Development – We will be continuing to develop our fine and gross motor skills indoors, outdoors and during PE sessions. We will continue to focus on developing shoulder and finger strength and dexterity in order to be able to hold a pencil and form letters correctly.
Expressive Arts and Design – We will have opportunities to paint, draw and use play dough. We will be designing, cutting, sticking and mixing colours. We will develop our musical creativity, exploring sounds different musical instruments make and learning the songs and actions for our Nativity performance.
Understanding the World – The children will be learning about a variety of cultures and religions by finding out about their celebrations, special stories and aspects of their identity and relationships. For example, Guru Nanak’s birthday and Christmas.

This term’s topics: Wonders of the World – What makes us wonderfully unique?
Literacy – We will be reading environmental print, recognising and writing our own name. We will have a big focus on our daily phonics activities. The children will be beginning to learn how to identify sounds in words and how to segment or blend them. We will be looking at lots of books in our literacy lessons and we will be discussing our favourite characters.
Maths – We will be exploring numbers to 10 and beyond, accurately counting different amounts in a range of fun and exciting ways. We will also be learning how to subitise.
Communication and Language – We will be learning about the importance of speaking and listening to each other, sharing ideas, responding to instructions, answering questions and using language in imaginative play.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development – Children will be settling in to their new class, routines and building relationships with both adults and their peers. We will be talking about who we are, our families and the things we enjoy doing. During our Jigsaw PSHE sessions we will be discussing a range of emotions and feelings, exploring ‘Being Me in this World’.
Physical Development – We will be continuing to develop our fine and gross motor skills indoors, outdoors and during PE sessions. We will focus on developing shoulder and finger strength and dexterity in order to be able to hold a pencil and form letters correctly.
Expressive Arts and Design – We will have opportunities to paint, draw and use play dough. We will be designing, cutting, sticking and mixing colours. We will be creating self-portraits and portraits of friends, making collages, seasonal and topic related pictures. To develop our musical creativity, we will be exploring sounds different musical instruments make.
Understanding the Word – We will talk about some of our similarities and differences in relation to friends or family. The children will be encouraged to select and use resources around the classroom to build and construct a variety of models. The children will learn about a variety of religions by finding out about their celebrations, special stories and aspects of their identity and relationships.

English: Poetry – exploring acrostic, shape and free verse poems.
Maths: Numbers to 40 and addition and subtraction word problems.
RE: The children will be thinking about ‘What does it mean to belong to Hinduism?’ They will learn to recognise and name Hindu symbols and artefacts; learn about how the daily routine of a Hindu is influenced by their beliefs and values and they will learn about some important Hindu stories.
Science: Animals including humans -senses. The children will learn about the human body and the senses.
Geography: How can we help look after our environment? The children will learn about the impact pollution has on the environment and discuss what they could do to help.
Art and Design: Painting and mixed media: Colour splash. The children will learn a range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.
PSHE: Healthy Me – We will be learning about how to make healthy choices and how to stay safe and healthy.

Your child’s reading record will be checked weekly. Please use this book to write any comments that you wish an adult to see and also please sign it daily so that the adults are aware that your child is reading consistently at home.

Spring Term 2
Curriculum
English: This term the whole school focus will be on poetry. The children will be exploring a range of poems including: free verse poems, kennings and performance poetry. The children will be learning to develop positive attitudes to reading and understanding of what they read by listening to and discussing a wide range of poetry, preparing poems to read aloud and to perform, showing understanding through intonation, tone, volume and action.
Maths: The topics for this half term will be: money, time, pictograms and bar graphs.
Curriculum: The topic that will be explored is Where in the world does our food come from? Within this topic, Year 3 will learn all about Fair Trade. They will be learning about how food comes from around the world and how children, farmers and villages can often be exploited for food such as chocolate and coffee.
Science: Year 3 science will focus on Animals, Including Humans-Keeping Healthy. Children will learn that animals, including humans, need the right types and amount of nutrition, and that they cannot make their own food; they get nutrition from what they eat.
Religious Education: How and why do Hindus celebrate Holi?
PSHE: Our topic for this half term is Healthy Me. The children learn what it means to be fit and healthy and how to keep themselves safe.
Design and Technology: Electrical Systems: Static electricity.
Computing: Programming A-Sequencing Sounds. In this unit children will explore the concept of sequencing in programming through Scratch.

Spring Term 1
Curriculum
English: The focus this term will be on Traditional and Fairy Tales. We will be exploring the stories Pinocchio and Rumpelstiltskin, working towards writing the children writing their own Fairy Tale.
Maths: The children will begin looking at measure. Exploring different units to measure the length of objects.
PSHE and the curriculum: The topic overview for this half term is How can I have a healthy body and mind? Children will be discussing what it means to have a healthy body and a healthy mind. Learning strategies to manage their own physical and mental health.
Science: The topic for this term is Animals Including Humans –skeleton and muscles. The children will learn where animals get their food from and why it is important fuel. The children will also be learning about skeletons, muscles and joints.
Religious Education: In RE lessons, the children will be learning about special symbols and signs used in special religions. We will be focusing on how Muslims and Christians use art and symbols in their place of worship. The children will explore different artefacts and discuss how they are used.
PSHE: The topic for this half term is, Dreams and Goals. The children will be looking at what creates good mental and physical health. We will be reading Me…Jane by Patrick McDonnell within the lessons. |

Autumn Term 2
Curriculum
English:
In English, we will be focusing on correspondence and letter writing. To begin with children will be exploring the text UG by Raymond Briggs where they will be focusing on letter writing. The children will write a letter to a character from the book to find out about the life of prehistoric people.
Maths:
Children will explore multiplication and division of 3, 4 and 8. They will then get to use their experience of multiplication and division to solve word problems,
History:
The whole school topic for this half term is, Special people and special places. Within this topic the children will be exploring, What do you know about prehistoric Britain, from the Stone Age to the Iron Age?
Science:
Year 3 science will focus on light. Children will learn about types of light sources, they will look at how light travels and will explore shadows.
Religious Education:
In RE lessons, the children will be looking at the importance of light within religion. The children will then move onto learning about religious festivals and the reasons these festivals are celebrated. The festivals that will be explored are Diwali, Christmas and Hanukah.

English:
We will be focusing on Black History Month, this will involve reading texts from other cultures and exploring a more diverse range of authors and main characters within the texts.
Maths:
We will focus on number covering covers numbers up to 1000 and focuses on the value of each digit: place value. Pupils will learn how to compose and decompose numbers, compare, order and look for patterns.
Wider Curriculum:
What was the world like before there were people? Children will be exploring the different types of dinosaurs and how volcanoes are formed.
Science:
We will be exploring different rocks and their properties.
Religious Education:
How do Jewish people celebrate their beliefs at home and in the synagogue? Children will learn about how Jewish people celebrate the festivals of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
Spring Term 2
Curriculum
English: Once Upon a Time. There will be a focus on Fairy Tales for this whole half term, exploring the stories of Snow White working towards the children writing their own Fairy Tale.
Mathematics: Further multiplication and division of numbers up to 3 digits and reading time on both 12hr and 24hr clocks, how to convert between units of time and solving time word problems.
History: Mayan civilisation (c.900) compared with Britain (c.900). Learning about the differences in the civilisations- looking at different sources of information and their reliability
Science: The children will learn about sound and how sound travels. They will be asking questions and taking part in experiments.
Religious Education: What is special to me and the people in my community? What makes me the person I am?
Computing: Photo editing. The children will develop their understanding of how digital images can be changed and edited, and how they can then be resaved and reused
PSHE: Dreams and Goals. The children will be looking at the following text: Salt in His Shoes by Michael Jordan,
Art: Painting and mixed media: Light and dark. Children will be using shadows and tint to create 3D effect images.

English: We will be reading ‘Look Both Ways’ by Jason Reynolds and will be reading ‘Journey to Jo’burg’ by Beverley Naidoo. The children will be looking analysing characters and will the opportunity to write their own setting / character descriptions.
Mathematics: MNP Chapter 1 – numbers to 10000, MNP Chapter 2 – addition and subtraction within 10000, MNP Chapter 3 – multiplication and division and MNP Chapter 6 – fractions.
Geography: We will be locating countries with the world’s most famous rivers and the mountains from which they originate. Investigating the rivers and what makes them unique and special. Understanding the water cycle and learn about the impact of water on communities.
Science: States of matter
Religious Education: What is special to me and the people in my community? Children will have the opportunity to see and understand how diverse our community is and will be able to find similarities and differences.

Spring Term 2
Curriculum
This term’s topics:
English: Year 5 will be looking at poetry this half term. They will be analysing a variety of poetry such as cinquain, free verse and narrative. They will be exploring how the vocabulary and figurative language has an impact on the reader. The children will be composing their own poems linked to the rest of the curriculum. They will also have the opportunity to perform poetry ensuring they have correct intonation, volume and tone.
Maths: Year 5 will be starting this half term with a new chapter of Geometry where they will begin with a focus on angles and go on to study position and movement of shapes. This will tie in with their previous topic of graphs as they will be drawing axis and labelling graphs. They will then move onto measurements such as perimeter and area and learn to find the perimeter and area of shapes independently.
Wider Curriculum: This term the children will be learning about Forests and where in the world different forests are located. The children will also discover what the climate is like in the rainforest and which animal and insect species live there. Alongside this, there will be the opportunity to create some amazing artwork as well as producing a stuffed toy with a rainforest theme for D&T.
Science: This term Year 5 be learning about Earth and Space. They will have the opportunity to explore and learn about the solar system. They will learn about the Earth as well as other planets.
Religious Education: This term we will be studying the meaning of thankfulness. We will have the chance to consider what we are truly thankful for and what we appreciate about working with others. We will also read a variety of stories linked to different religions, from which we will try to interpret the moral or message regarding what thankfulness means to different people.
PSHE: This term the topic is ‘Healthy me’. Children will be exploring how we can be healthy physically. They will be discussing how to make healthy choices in life regarding things like alcohol and smoking as well as having a healthy balanced diet.
Spring Term 1
Curriculum
English:
This term we will be looking at a range of fairy tales and traditional tales. The children will begin the term by reading Cinderella and Cinder (gender-swapped fairytale. They will have the opportunity to retell the tale as well as write their own with a few modern twists. Children will develop their writing by using direct speech and cohesive devices to ensure their writing flows.
Maths:
This term we will be learning how to read and write decimal numbers. The children will use their knowledge of fractions to convert fractions to decimals. They will also be adding and subtracting and comparing decimals. The children will then go on to learn about percentages and how to draw and analyse graphs.
Wider Curriculum:
This term we will be learning about The Victorians. We will be exploring what life was like living in the East End of London during the Victorian era as well as creating fact files about Queen Victoria and discovering important changes or events which took place within this period in history. We will also be attending an exciting workshop at Kensington Palace.
Science:
This term the children will be continuing to learn about forces and develop their understanding of pulleys, levers and gears. With this knowledge, they will be using rods and dowels to build a Victorian automata toy.
Religious Education:
This term we will be considering what inner forces affect the way in which we think and behave and what influences this.
PSHE: ‘Celebrating difference’. The children will be looking at the following text: Taller than before by Bernard Ashley.
Autumn Term 2
Curriculum
This term’s topics:
English:
This term we will be exploring two texts called The Rabbits and How to Save the World With a Chicken and Egg. The children will be working towards writing formal letters about climate change which would also link to COP27. Children will be identifying features of a persuasive letter and applying these features within their writing.
Maths:
This term we will be learning about different methods for multiplication, such as partitioning for multiplying 4 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers and the column method as another strategy. Later on this term we will be delving deeper into division and exploring using number bonds and long division as our main methods for this.
BPS Curriculum:
This term we will be learning about Ancient Egypt. We will be exploring how the Ancient Egyptians lived and worked and why the Rosetta Stone was so important. In Art, we are going to learn about Sculpture and 3D and the features of installation art and how it can communicate a message.
Science:
This term we will learning about forces. The children will be learning about theories of gravity.
They will be looking at Isaac Newton and Galilei Galileo and will be carrying out practical
experiments to do with forces.
Religious Education:
This term we will be exploring how Christmas is celebrated in different parts of the world and the similarities and differences within stories about aspects of Christmas.
Autumn Term 1
Curriculum
English:
This term there is going to be a whole school focus on texts linked to Black History Month and multiculturalism with a more diverse range of authors and main characters within the texts. For their Big Write, the children will be writing a narrative. Later on in the term, we will be looking at poetry and analysing poetic structure.
Maths:
Number is the first maths topic the children get to experience during this half term. The children will be learning about place value and the composition of larger numbers. Later on this term we will be delving deeper into exploring number by looking at patterns of numbers and methods for addition and
subtraction.
Wider Curriculum:
Our theme is how to rediscover the wonders of the ancient world. We will be considering different civilisations, such as those during the Shang Dynasty, Indus Valley, Ancient Sumer and Ancient Egyptian times and looking at some of their societal and cultural beliefs and practices. In Art, we will be looking at the significance of painting portraitsm, as well as mixed media.
Science:
This term we will learning about properties of and changes in materials. The children will compare and group together everyday materials based on their properties. They will have the opportunity to demonstrate that dissolving, mixing and changes of state are reversible changes.
Religious Education:
The children will learn about a variety of religious and non-religious beliefs and viewpoints. They will have the opportunity to discuss what impacts beliefs have on actions and learn about other beliefs in their community.

Curriculum
This term’s topics:
English: narrative, journalistic and poetry text-types
As climate change is a big issue in the world right now, the children in year 6 will be learning about changes to help the world. They will then write persuasive letters to the mayor of Newham trying to convince her to make changes to all the schools in our local area.
We will then move onto reading, Goodnight Mister Tom, by Michelle Magorian. The focus of this will be to further our social and cultural knowledge of Britain during this time as well as to deepen our understanding of narrative writing.
Maths: fractions and decimals
Our focus this half term will be on advancing the pupils’ understanding of fractions and decimals and the relationship between them. We will continue to consolidate our understanding of dividing and multiplying fractions and learn how to solve mixed operation problems using fractions.

Autumn Term 1
Curriculum
English: narrative, journalistic and poetry text-types
We will begin the half term reading ‘The Infinite’ by Bernardine Evaristo. The focus of this will be to examine the common features and cultural importance of narrative writing.
We will also study poems written by Children’s Laureate Joseph Coelho. During this topic, we will examine poetic and literary features, such as figurative language, iambic pentameter and rhyme.
Maths: number and place value
Our focus for the first half term will be on consolidating number skills for values up to 10 million. Through the Maths No Problem! scheme, pupils will also further their reasoning and problem solving skills through use of the concrete-pictorial-abstract approach.
Wider Curriculum: Where are the wonders of the world?
The children will be brushing up on their geography skills, using different types of atlases to locate the wonders of the world.
Science: The art of being human
Children this half term will be investigating organs in the body and their function.
Religious Education: Similarities and differences between religions and world views.
By the end of this topic, children will be able to compare differing religious and world views.
